Aiki-Jitsu SA (AJSA)

Aiki-Jitsu was introduced in South Africa, by Sensei Jack Mileham 5th Dan Chief Instructor All Africa. Sensei Jack traveled to Japan, where he trained and lived there for five years. 

When he returned, he opened the first Aiki-Jitsu Dojo in Port Elizabeth (PE). Among the new students, was a student by the name of Karel “Wollie” Wolmarans who went onto become one of Jack’s top students, eventually a senior student and a Sensei. Wollie, trained for years under Sensei Jack achieving a 5th Dan and been awarded Chief Instructor All Africa. 

Sensei Wollie, not only trained in Aiki-Jitsu he also was training at another dojo in Karate, Kickboxing, Ju-Jitsu and Judo and also traveled to Japan and Taiwan where he continued to train in Aiki-Jitsu and the other arts eventually awarded Shihan 8th Dan the highest graded in Aiki-Jitsu in South Africa. 

Shihan Dr. Wollie promoted Sensei Sarel Marais 5th Dan Principal Instructor and Sensei Robert Baker 3rd Dan Chief Instructor and only after Sensei Robert’s passing was Sensei Otto Pretorius promoted to 3rd Dan Chief Instructor All Africa which only lasted from 2000 – 2002 due to breach of contract and politics Sensei Otto’s 3rd Dan and title gradings where withdrawn and he was removed as Chief Instructor All Africa by Shihan Dr Wollie. 

Sensei Derrick Smit 1st Dan Instructor in Aiki-Jitsu also resigned and moved to Pretoria. 

Terence Teraine had been training in Aiki-Jitsu, Aikido, Ju-Jitsu, Goshin-Jitsu and Kubu-Jitsu under Sensei Robert from 1993 – 1999 a period of six years until Sensei Robert’s passing and the closing of his dojo end of 1999. Senpai Terence opened his own club in April 2000 and the club was registered through Aiki-Jitsu SA and YAFSA, JKI and JKIAI registration number 24207. 

Senpai Terence continued his training in Aiki-Jitsu under Sensei Otto until the club was closed and attended a 4 day camp of 6-8 hours per day training under Shihan Dr. Wollie and Sensei Sarel where he was awarded Black Belt 1st Dan Instructor (Sensei) in 2000, he went onto attended another camp in 2001, and two camps in 2002 and was promoted to 2nd Dan Senior Instructor and the next camp end of 2004 he was promoted to 3rd Dan Chief Instructor by Shihan Dr Wollie Wolmarans Sensei 8th Dan. 

Sensei Terence promoted long time senior students Leonard Neilson, Petro De Villiers to black belt 1st Dan Instructors and years later Dennis Locker to black belt 1st Dan Instructor. 

Sensei Terence continued training in Aiki-Jitsu, eventually developed his own style called Tenchikan Aiki-Jitsu or Combat Aiki-Jitsu where he was promoted to Shihan 5th Dan by Shihan Sarel 7th Dan in 2011 and eventually 7th Dan by Hanshi Dr Karel “Wollie” Wolmarans 10th Dan in 2024.

Fun Fact: Suzette VD Merwe was awarded after years of training to black belt 1st Dan Instructor by Shihan Terence and Shihan Sarel in 2015. 

Fun Fact: Candice Hitchcox was awarded after years of training to black belt 1st Dan Instructor by Shihan Terence in 2018.
